I’m pleased to share news of a groundbreaking report issued today by the Association of American of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The report – Accessibility, Inclusion, and Action in Medical Education: Lived Experiences of Learners and Physicians With Disabilities – was co-authored by Lisa Meeks, PhD, of the University of Michigan Medical School, and Neera R. Jain, MS, CRC, of the University of Auckland Faculty of Education and Social Work.

This very comprehensive report surveys the terrain and identifies considerations and resources for schools seeking to enhance access for those with disabilities. It is constructive, including examples of positive actions to reduce physical, administrative, and cultural barriers. It is also innovative, drawing upon extensive interviews with medical students and physicians with disabilities and increasing awareness of their experiences. The report was issued today and already I’m seeing news coverage and posts on social media.
